The Heart Failure Policy Network has launched a campaign to support the European Parliament Written Declaration on Heart Failure no 110/2016.

What is the Written Declaration?

The new European Parliament Written Declaration on Heart Failure was launched on October 19th 2016 in the European Parliament, at a debate hosted by MEP Annie Schreijer-Pierik.

Co-authored by 17 MEPs and aimed to promote policy awareness of heart failure (HF) as well as raise the condition as a policy priority across Europe, the Written Declaration calls on the European Commission to:

  • Encourage Member States to promote national plans and collect adequate data on HF
  • Create a Europe-wide strategy to support public awareness, patient advocacy, and the exchange of research and best practice in HF
  • Support training on HF amongst GPs and internists, and promote HF specialisation and accreditation of training for nurses and allied health professionals

Why do we need the Written Declaration? 1 in 5 of us are at risk of developing heart failure in our lifetimes, and 15 million people currently live with HF, a severe and incurable condition where the heart cannot pump enough blood to ensure the functioning of the other organs of the body.  The majority of EU countries do not have health care strategies for HF nor feature the condition in their cardiovascular diseases plans, and there is no EU-wide strategy supporting public awareness, prevention, diagnosis and management.

The Written Declaration will help us provide the impetus for policy change to drive improvement in the response to heart failure across Europe.

How can you support the Written Declaration? If you believe that heart failure should be a policy priority across Europe, do not hesitate to support the Written Declaration through your MEPS and/or social media! Find out the details on how to support the campaign here.
